‘Jobs at risk’ as easyJet cuts flights

easyJet jobs are at riskEmployees of easyJet may be set to face redundancies after it was revealed that the airline is planning to make cuts to its flight routes.

Around one fifth of its current flights from Luton are expected to be axed as part of the cost-saving measures as it moves to focus more on Gatwick.

It claimed that the decision had been made due to the 25 per cent increase in landing charges incurred at Luton over the past three years, which could now leave up to 100 jobs at the airport at risk.

The airline also notes that it had come under pressure from air passenger duty charges set by the government in an attempt to reduce carbon emissions from the aviation sector.

Speaking to the Times, Andy Harrison, chief executive of easyJet, said: "I am deeply disappointed that Abertis and Luton borough council have not taken a more far-sighted approach which would have protected jobs at Luton."

Meanwhile, British Airways cabin crew look set to take industrial action before Christmas, the Sun reports, following plans to cut jobs and reduce pay.
