Leading global law firm Mayer Brown announced the launch of the UK employment law podcast series. The podcasts are another avenue to inform clients about important legal developments and trends that affect their business, and enable employers to be on top of the opportunities offered by change as well as the challenges.

The fortnightly podcasts are designed to provide valuable insight to UK HR professionals and employment law specialists as well as those responsible for employee engagement. Episodes will look at the most important developments in the previous fortnight for UK employers, and will cover cases decided in that period and any legislative changes announced. The podcast is led by Nick Robertson, Head of the London Employment Group, who is rated by Chambers Directory as one of the top employment lawyers in the UK.

The launch podcast looks at several topical cases, including Wrexham Golf Co Ltd v Ingham which explores the issue of redundancy selection pools. The case is important for employers because it highlights that when making selections for redundancy, employers are allowed to decide that a potentially redundant job is a unique role and so the job holder does not need to be pooled with other employees, when deciding who to make redundant. The tribunal has to allow the employer a degree of discretion in deciding whether a role is unique or not. He states that employers will welcome the decision as it will make it more difficult to persuade a tribunal that a dismissal is unfair.
